The first step to creating your web site is to register a domain name.  The domain name is the name that people will type into the address bar to find your site.

Network Solutions, and Register.com are the most established domain name registrars, but many others have competitive prices and offer essentially the same services.   You'll want to look at several different companies in order to get the best value for your money.

1. If you expect to have your website for a while, you can usually save money by registering for multiple years at once
2. In general, your name, email and mailing address will be made available to people who ask for it.  Many services will sell you private registration (where only they have your name and address) for an extra fee.  I recommend either doing this or setting up a P.O. box to receive any junk mail related to your site.
3. Support: you want to know that the company you've registered with will be available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week if you run into a problem
4. Domain forwarding.  If you are registering the .net, .org or other domains, domain forwarding lets you automatically forward those addresses to your site
5. Account management tools: you don't need anything fancy here, but it should be easy to move your domain to another host if needed

Tips to create a website - Choose a Domain Name

Start by thinking of the name you'd like for your website.  It should be catchy and easy to remember.  There are three different options for naming your site

1. If it is a personal site, you can use your own name. e.g. www.johnsmith.com
2. If you are setting up a website for your existing business, you can try to get your business name or the business name followed by the city name.  e.g. www.acme.com or www.acmeseattle.com
3. You can choose a name that uses the words people would type in Google to find your site.  My site name is an example of this solution - hosting.blogchina.com 

Note: there are a variety of three letter extensions you can choose from, including .com, .net, .org, .info, .us, .biz, .tv and more.  I recommend registering with a .com name to avoid confusion and to make your site name easy to remember.

What if your domain name is not available?

1. Browse to to the website and look for a contact us page or an email address.  Contact the owner and see whether they are willing to sell you the name.  Some people have site names reserved just so that they can sell them - prices vary.
2. Try one of the suggestions provided by the domain registration service
3. Try adding a prefix (e.g. MyFreeWebHostingAdvice instead of FreeWebHostingAdvice) or using a thesaurus to find alternate words

Congratulations!  Now that you've decided on and registered a domain name, you need to choose a service to host your web pages.   The web host provides you with space for your web pages, tools to create the web pages, and support if you run into problems.

Here are some factors you will want to consider in choosing a web host:

1. Tools: Do they provide beginner friendly web design tools, or do you need to provide your own web design tools or service.  If they do provide tools, are they flexible enough to meet your needs?  Do they assume knowledge of HTML?
2. Support: Are they available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week?  Are they available by phone, or only by email?
3. Commitment: How long is the subscription you are signing up for - can you cancel at any time?
4. Storage: How much space do you receive for your site?
5. Email: Does the web hosting include email (POP3) accounts, or are those seperate
6. Reliability: Do they make any guarantees about "uptime" - the percentage of time per month your site will be available to customers?

Most people will choose standard web hosting, but if you plan to have a lot of traffic or do not want to share a server, you can choose "dedicated web hosting" which gives you your own dedicated server machine that the Web Hosting company manages for you.
